New Jersey gardens and easy walks, with the benches and restrooms noted
Arboretums, iris beds, cherry trees and flat paths along the canal and the bay. Here is what the ground is like at each one, where to sit, and when to go.

A good walk does not have to be a hike. New Jersey has gardens with paved paths, a canal towpath that stays level for miles, and a hawk platform where you can sit and watch the sky. This list is built around one question: can I enjoy this without worrying about my footing or finding a bathroom?
We checked each place's own website in October 2026 for path surfaces, restrooms and hours. Where a site does not say, we tell you to ask.
Which gardens have the smoothest paths?
Duke Farms, Hillsborough
Doris Duke's former estate covers 2,700 acres in Somerset County. It is the best choice on this list if you want distance without effort. Most of its more than 15 miles of trail are flat, paved and wider than 36 inches. Meadow and woodland trails are unpaved and marked with dotted lines on the property map.
- Help getting around: A free accessibility transport runs between the Farm Barn Orientation Center and the Orchid Range for visitors with limited mobility. Reserve it ahead.
- Restrooms: Accessible restrooms are in the Farm Barn and the Orchid Range. Composting toilets on the trails vary, and some have steps.
- Benches: Several line the path to the Farm Barn entrance. One has both a backrest and armrests.
- Hours: Trails are open Tuesday through Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Closed Sunday and Monday. Saturday visits from April through October need a free parking pass, released on Monday afternoons.
Check the Duke Farms visit page for closures before you drive.
Best season: Spring and fall for walking. The Orchid Range is a warm stop in winter, though paths are not salted after storms.
Frelinghuysen Arboretum, Morris Township
This Morris County park has 28 garden areas and more than 3,200 kinds of plants around an 1891 mansion. The county describes many paved trails for easy strolls. Look for the Rose Garden and the dawn redwoods in the Pinetum.
- Hours: Daily, 8 a.m. to sunset, all year. The county lists no admission fee.
- Restrooms: Listed as an amenity. Ask at the Haggerty Center where the nearest one is.
- Phone: 973-326-7601.
Best season: June for roses. Fall color is lovely too.
Reeves-Reed Arboretum, Summit
A small, gracious estate garden that is free to explore, with a suggested $10 donation. Grounds are open every day: 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. from April through October, and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. from November through March.
- Surfaces: Much of the historic garden has ramps and paved paths. Some areas are hard to reach without help because the terrain varies. The arboretum is building a continuous accessible loop through its "A Path for All" project.
- Accessible areas: The Visitors Center, Welcome Walk, Perennial Border, Wisner House gallery and patio.
- Restrooms: Accessible ones are in Wisner House and the Stackhouse Education Center.
- Parking: Accessible parking is limited, and no wheelchairs are available on site.
Grounds For Sculpture, Hamilton
Part garden, part outdoor museum. The main path is paved with paver stone and accessible, and accessible routes are marked on the online map. Smaller side paths are gravel or sand and can be narrow or steep. Wheelchairs rent for $15 a day and scooters for $29 for the first four hours, first come, first served. Seniors 65 and older pay $18, and timed tickets must be booked online. Closed Tuesdays. See the accessibility page before you go.
Best season: Fall, when the trees turn and the summer crowds are gone.
When should I go for flowers?
| Garden | Peak show | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Branch Brook Park cherry blossoms, Newark and Belleville | Usually April | Free |
| Skylands lilacs and crabapples, Ringwood | Mid to late spring | Free garden; summer weekend parking fee |
| Presby Iris Gardens, Upper Montclair | Mid-May to first week of June | Free; $10 suggested donation |
| Frelinghuysen roses, Morris Township | June | No fee listed |
Branch Brook Park, Newark and Belleville
Essex County's Branch Brook Park has more than 5,300 Japanese flowering cherry trees in 18 varieties. Bloom usually peaks in the second and third weeks of April, though it came early in 2026, from about April 3 to 12. The thickest groves are near the Cherry Blossom Welcome Center in the park's Extension Division.
Tips: Parking is free along the park roads, behind the white lines. The Welcome Center lot holds about 130 cars. On race days the park road closes to cars, so check the schedule. The park's site does not list restrooms, so plan a stop before you come.
Presby Memorial Iris Gardens, Upper Montclair
More than 10,000 irises in a long strip along Upper Mountain Avenue. Bloom season usually runs mid-May through the first week of June. The gardens are open 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Be ready for: Grass and uneven ground, with steep slopes in some beds. The garden itself says it is not fully accessible. The Walther House and gift shop are up seven steps. There is no on-site parking, and street parking is limited at peak. Go on a weekday morning. Questions: 973-783-5974.
Skylands, the New Jersey State Botanical Garden, Ringwood
Formal gardens around a Tudor-style manor in Ringwood State Park. Garden admission is always free. It is open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. in daylight saving time and 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. in standard time.
Good to know: From Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, weekends and holidays carry a cash parking fee of $5 for New Jersey cars. Free guided garden tours run Sundays from May through October. Your free State Parks Senior Citizen Pass covers park entrance fees. Garden details are on the Skylands website.
Where can I walk a long way on level ground?
Delaware and Raritan Canal towpath
The D&R Canal State Park has more than 70 miles of multi-use path beside a historic canal. A towpath follows the water, so grades are gentle. It suits walkers, cyclists and anyone pushing a wheelchair with help. Popular starting points include Bulls Island, the Prallsville Mills near Stockton, and Griggstown.
Before you go: A resurfacing project is under way, and the surface changes from section to section. Pick a short out-and-back from a lot with restrooms. Walk 20 minutes out, then turn around. Call State Parks at 1-800-843-6420 to ask which lots have facilities open.
Island Beach State Park, Ocean County
A long barrier island of dunes, bay marsh and ocean beach, just south of Seaside Park. In fall and winter it is wonderfully empty. Bring your Senior Citizen Pass, which covers entrance. Ask at the gate which restrooms are open in the off-season and whether a beach wheelchair can be borrowed.
Cape May Point State Park and the Hawkwatch
Fall is the season here. New Jersey Audubon counts hawks from a platform just east of the state park parking lot, every day from September 1 to November 30, sunrise to sunset. The biggest flights usually pass from late September to mid-October, often after a cold front with northwest winds.
The platform is a short walk from the car, and the counters are glad to point out birds. The lighthouse stands next to it. Nearby, the Cape May Bird Observatory's Northwood Center at 701 East Lake Drive is open daily, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. It runs "E-Z Birding" walks at a relaxed pace, with no preregistration. Phone: 609-400-3868. Daily counts are posted on the Cape May Hawkwatch page.
Dress for wind. The platform is open to the weather, and a fleece and hat make a long sit far more pleasant.
What should I bring and watch for?
- Shoes with grip. Even paved paths have leaves and acorns in fall. Walking poles help on grass.
- A folding cane seat. Benches are not always where you need them. A lightweight seat lets you rest anywhere.
- Water and a snack. Cafés close for the season, and the Farm Barn Café at Duke Farms is closed until November.
- A plan for the restroom. Know the nearest one before you start, and use it before you set out.
- Your Senior Citizen Pass and a phone. Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back.
Trying to walk to the far end of a long path. Use the turn-around rule instead. When you have used half your energy, head back.
How do I make walking a habit?
Pick one place close to home and go every week for a month. You will learn where the benches are and how long the loop takes. Bring a friend, or join a guided tour like the Sunday walks at Skylands. For more ways to stay active, read our guide to healthy aging in New Jersey. For free ways to get out, see free and discounted things for NJ seniors and easy day trips.
Gardens change every week. The iris beds that look like grass in April are knee high and purple by Memorial Day. Going often is half the pleasure.
