Step by step

Sign up for Medicare at 65

The order of operations for getting Medicare right the first time, including if you're still working.

  1. Mark your enrollment window

Your Initial Enrollment Period is seven months long. It starts three months before the month you turn 65 and ends three months after. Signing up in the first three months means coverage starts on time.

  2. Decide whether you need Part B now

If you or your spouse are still working at a company with 20 or more employees and have health coverage through that job, you can often delay Part B without a penalty. Ask your HR office for a written confirmation of coverage.

  3. Apply through Social Security

Apply online at ssa.gov, by phone at 1-800-772-1213, or at a local Social Security office. If you already get Social Security benefits, you'll be enrolled in Parts A and B automatically.

  4. Choose how you'll get coverage

Pick Original Medicare with a Medigap policy and a Part D drug plan, or a Medicare Advantage plan. Read our comparison guide before choosing.

  5. Get a free second opinion

New Jersey's SHIP counselors compare plans for free and sell nothing. Call 1-800-792-8820 for an appointment.

  6. Check for help paying

If your income is modest, apply for PAAD, Senior Gold and Medicare Savings Programs. One NJSave application covers several. See Help with prescriptions and bills.
