20 easy day trips in New Jersey, region by region
Lighthouses, gardens, museums and wildlife drives, with honest notes on stairs, walking distances and the best season to go.

From almost any New Jersey town, a lighthouse, garden or good museum is an hour or two away. The trick is picking places that match your energy and your knees.
Each of these 20 trips works as an easy day. Where a site publishes step counts or accessibility services, we say so. Hours and fees change often, so check before you leave.
Bring your free NJ State Park Senior Citizen Pass (residents 62+) and federal Senior Pass if you have one. See our guide to free and discounted things to do.
North Jersey
Thomas Edison National Historical Park, West Orange
Walk through Edison's real laboratory complex, including his library, chemistry lab and machine shop. A short drive away is Glenmont, his Victorian home in Llewellyn Park.
Getting around: An elevator serves the second and third floors of Building 5, the main lab. Free manual wheelchairs are available to borrow, first come, first served. Glenmont is not wheelchair accessible, and its tour has many steps, though you can view the house from accessible outdoor areas. Call the visitor desk at 973-736-0550 ext. 11.
Best time: Any time of year. Mostly indoors, so good on rainy days.
Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park, Paterson
See a 77-foot waterfall, 260 feet wide, in the heart of Paterson.
Getting around: The overlook is close to the park lot at 72 McBride Avenue Extension. The main route is paved and a mile or less. Stairs lead down to the lawn below the overlook, so stay on the upper level if steps are hard. Walkways can close when they are slippery.
Best time: After a few days of heavy rain, when the falls roar. In a deep freeze, the falls can partly ice over, which is a sight of its own.
New Jersey Botanical Garden at Skylands, Ringwood
Stroll formal gardens around Skylands Manor, a stone mansion in Ringwood State Park. The garden is on the State and National Registers of Historic Places, and volunteers lead periodic manor house tours.
Getting around: The garden opens at 8 a.m. and closes at 8 p.m. in daylight saving time and 6 p.m. the rest of the year. On summer weekends and holidays from Memorial Day weekend to Labor Day, there is a $5 state parking fee, cash only, for New Jersey vehicles. Terrain varies across the garden, so check the garden's parking and accessibility page for the easiest routes.
Best time: Late spring, when the gardens are at their fullest, and October for foliage.
Morristown National Historical Park and Frelinghuysen Arboretum, Morristown
Visit Washington's Headquarters Museum and tour the Ford Mansion, where George Washington spent the winter of 1779 to 1780. Finish at the nearby Frelinghuysen Arboretum.
Getting around: The museum and Jockey Hollow visitor center are open Thursday through Monday, 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Ford Mansion is by guided tour only, with free passes handed out at the museum desk, first come, first served. Ask about the tour route if stairs are a concern. The arboretum is open daily from 8 a.m. to sunset and has many paved trails.
Best time: Spring and fall. The arboretum's gardens are lovely from April through October.
Liberty State Park, Jersey City
Walk Liberty Walk, the waterfront promenade facing the Statue of Liberty and lower Manhattan. Visit Empty Sky, New Jersey's 9/11 memorial, and the restored Central Railroad of New Jersey Terminal, where ferries leave for Liberty and Ellis islands.
Getting around: The promenade is flat and paved. A free shuttle runs on weekends and holidays from April to November. Liberty Science Center, also in the park, is a good indoor backup.
Best time: A calm spring or fall day. Bring a layer for the wind.
Central Jersey
Grounds For Sculpture, Hamilton
Wander 42 acres of gardens filled with large outdoor sculpture, plus indoor galleries and places to eat.
Getting around: The main path is paver stone and accessible. Smaller paths are gravel or sand and can be uneven or steep. Wheelchairs rent for $15 a day and scooters for $29 for the first four hours, first come, first served, with ID. Access Mobile tours in ADA-rated vehicles cover the grounds in 45 minutes. Reserve at 609-586-0616. Check admission prices online before you go.
Best time: May and June for blooms, or a mild weekday in September or October.
Duke Farms, Hillsborough
Explore 2,700 acres on Doris Duke's former estate, with the glass Orchid Range as the highlight.
Getting around: Most of the trails are flat, paved and wide. A free Accessibility Transport service runs between the Farm Barn Orientation Center and the Orchid Range for people with limited mobility. Reservations are required. Saturday visits from April through October need a free parking pass, released Monday afternoons.
Best time: Spring for wildflowers and migrating birds. Weekdays avoid the Saturday parking pass entirely.
Princeton, Mercer County
Spend the morning at the free Princeton University Art Museum, then walk Nassau Street for lunch and bookshops.
Getting around: The museum is open daily, until 8 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays. Its website lists accessibility and parking details.
Best time: Any season. A Thursday or Friday evening at the museum avoids weekend crowds.
New Jersey State Museum, Trenton
See natural history, art and state history, then catch a planetarium show.
Getting around: General admission is free. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday, 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m., at 205 West State Street. Planetarium tickets cost $10 for adults, with $1 off for seniors 65 and older.
Best time: Winter, or any rainy day.
Lambertville and the Delaware and Raritan Canal towpath, Hunterdon County
Browse antique shops in this river town, then walk the Delaware and Raritan Canal towpath. A bridge with a walkway crosses to New Hope, Pennsylvania.
Getting around: The towpath is level, which makes it one of the easiest long walks in the state. Walk out as far as you like and turn back.
Best time: October for river foliage, or a spring weekday.
Jersey Shore
Sandy Hook, Gateway National Recreation Area, Middletown
See the Sandy Hook Lighthouse, completed in 1764 and the oldest operating lighthouse in the nation. Walk the historic buildings of Fort Hancock and look across the bay to Manhattan.
Getting around: Lighthouse tours are seasonal and led by rangers. Sign up in person at the Sandy Hook Visitor Center on the day of your visit. The climb is 95 stairs and a 9-rung ladder, so many visitors happily stay on the ground. Call 732-872-5970 for tour times.
Best time: May, June, September and October, when beach traffic is light.
Twin Lights Historic Site, Highlands
This twin-towered lighthouse sits on a hill in Highlands with sweeping views over Sandy Hook Bay and the Atlantic. Look for the huge first-order Fresnel lens on display in the generator building.
Getting around: The views from the grounds are excellent without climbing anything. The north tower, the one open for climbing, has 64 steps. Call ahead about current hours and which areas are open.
Best time: A clear fall day, when you can see the New York skyline.
Ocean Grove, Neptune Township
Walk the quiet boardwalk and Victorian streets of this camp meeting town. The centerpiece is the Great Auditorium, built in 1894. It seats about 7,000 and holds an organ with about 11,000 pipes.
Getting around: The boardwalk and town are flat. Many porches and inns have front steps, so plan your rest stops.
Best time: Summer for concerts and events in the Great Auditorium. September for warm, uncrowded beach walks.
Island Beach State Park, Berkeley Township
About 10 miles of undeveloped barrier island, with dunes, ocean beach and bay views. It is one of the last stretches of natural Jersey Shore.
Getting around: Beach wheelchairs, including ones fitted for surf fishing, are available at the two Bathing Beach Pavilions in summer and from the park office the rest of the year. Both pavilions have ramps. The Fisherman's Walkway at parking area A-7 is a wide boardwalk across the island. Call the park office at 732-793-0506.
Best time: September and early October, after summer fees and crowds fade.

Visit "Old Barney," the red-and-white tower at the north tip of Long Beach Island, lit since 1859, and watch boats run Barnegat Inlet.
Getting around: The climb is 217 steps to the top. If that is too much, the grounds, the inlet views and the interpretive center are all at ground level.
Best time: Late spring or fall. Call ahead for climbing hours, which are seasonal.
South Jersey and the Delaware Bay
Cape May Lighthouse and Cape May Point State Park, Cape May Point

Getting around: The climb is 199 steps on an open cast-iron spiral staircase, 217 steps in all from the ground. The Oil House at the base has a fully accessible orientation center and shop. Adult climbing tickets are $12. The zoo is open daily except Christmas, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in summer and to 3:30 p.m. in winter.
Best time: September and October, during fall bird migration, when Cape May is at its best and calmest.
Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge, Galloway
Drive the 8-mile Wildlife Drive through salt marsh, with the Atlantic City skyline across the water. The refuge sits on one of the busiest flight paths of the Atlantic Flyway.
Getting around: This is the best trip on the list for limited walking, because you can bird from your car. Entry is $4 per car, and the refuge honors America the Beautiful passes. Observation towers are at Gull Pond and Turtle Cove, and accessible restrooms are at headquarters. The drive is open sunrise to sunset.
Best time: Spring and fall migration. Bring binoculars.
Batsto Village, Wharton State Forest
Step into a restored 19th-century iron and glass village in the Pine Barrens, with a 36-room mansion, a general store, a sawmill and a nature center.
Getting around: The grounds are open dawn to dusk and the visitor center 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free most days. Summer weekends carry a $5 fee for New Jersey residents. Call 609-561-0024 for mansion tour times and to ask about accessibility.

Getting around: Hours are limited at first, so check with Cumberland County tourism before you drive down.
Best time: Late fall now, then May and June, when shorebirds and horseshoe crabs gather on the Delaware Bay beaches.
How do I plan an easy day?
- Call ahead. Ask three questions: Where is the closest accessible parking? Are there wheelchairs or shuttles? Where are the restrooms?
- Pick one main stop. One destination and a sit-down lunch beats three rushed stops.
- Go midweek. Parking is easier, lines are shorter and staff have more time to help.
- Pack for the weather. Shore sites are windier and cooler than inland towns. Bring water, a hat and a light jacket.
Prefer a group? Many senior centers run bus trips. See our guide to staying connected.
